The Phonetic Alphabet

Letters

The phonetic alphabet is the internationally used alphabet when pronouncing letters over voice transmission. It was adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 1956 and consists of 26 words that correspond to the 26 letters of the alphabet. It was designed to make communication via radio and telephone clear and simple despite language barriers and other factors that may have made transmission of letters unclear.
